Change of Plans

Change of Plans

Last week I decided that I would leave my contract position with Wizards of the Coast. I am no longer working on Dungeons & Dragons, although I may provide occasional consultation in the future. My decision is one based on differences of opinion with the company. However, I want to take this time to stress that my differences were not with my fellow designers, Rob Schwalb and Bruce Cordell. I enjoyed every moment of working with them over the past year. I have faith that they'll create a fun game. I'm rooting for them.

Due to my non-disclosure agreement, as well as a desire to keep things on a professional level, I have no intention of going into further detail at this time. (Mostly, I just hate drama, and would rather talk about more interesting things.)

As for what I'll be turning to next, I hope you'll stay tuned. I plan on having an interesting announcement in that regard in the near future.

Now I gotta admit, not only am I surprised to hear/see this piece of news but I'm also disappointed. That said, I'm sure that you're making the best choice that you can, for the best reasons, even if it's a hard call to make.

You're also handling it in a classy manner, as well. But that's to be expected, too.

As usually, I'll be looking forward to what comes next and wish you all the success that you deserve.

Good luck!

WHOA! Did NOT see this coming. I won't clutter things up with speculation (besides, I know in this industry it'll all come out sooner or later), but will instead wish both you and 5th edition all the best. Thanks for everything you've already contributed to the gaming community. Sincerely.

The very best of luck for the future Monte, and thank you for everything you have given (and doubtless will continue to give) to the hobby.

Well this is an interesting turn. I was excited to see your influence in the new game. I hope that your consulting in the future will show fruit that we will all get to enjoy.

Good luck on their upcoming projects, it is a pity that not going to contribute actively to the fifth edition of D&D.

Sorry to hear that it didn't work out, but something the best thing to do is step away. Best of luck with the next gig!

Bummer for D&D Next, but good luck. I'm sure (as always) we'll see you down the gaming trail. I sincerely hope that Paizo reaches out to you.

I hate non disclosure agreements. :P It's not that I want to know the drama stuff. i just want to know what, if anything, this disagreement had to do with the direction of Next.

Hey Monte,
Why don't you make us the game you would have made? I imagine with the OGL that will be possible.

Didn't he already do that with Arcana Unearthed (and the updated second one that was REALLY the game he wanted to make)?

Was here before you went to WOTC. No less interested now.

Good luck with your next adventure, and remember to identify the loot!

Monte I don't pay too much attention to the whole scene even though I play DnD religiously; I honestly thought you had already left years ago to help with Pathfinder!

Here's hoping you do so now :P

I... just lost interest in D&D 5th. Hearing that Monte was coming back was all that made me have any faith in it, and now I just don't. ;_;
